According to Hitwise, Facebook now surpasses MySpace in share of U.S. visits (June 2009). Facebook’s share is reported to be 32.19% of its 10 million user sample. MySpace’s share is 29.01%, YouTube is third at 9.26%, Tagged is fourth with 1.91% and Twitter is a respectable fifth with a “tiny” 1.70% share.

Speaking of Facebook, Sodexo’s use of the popular site for recruitment has resulted in improved positioning of their career-related pages on search engine results.

We’ve always been curious about what candidates do when they visit a company’s staffing or career site.

Many companies have no idea about their application abandonment rates or whether or not a visitor to their career pages left satisfied with the information found.

We do know of at least one company in our client roster that is successfully tracking hires through the entire online recruitment, application and post-application process to include data on hiring and retention.

We encourage companies tracking this activity to fill out this important CareerXRoads survey. The results will benefit the entire human resources community.

Dan Schawbel’s list of Apple iPhone Apps for job searches has all of my favorites including iJobs, CareerBuilder and LinkedIn although I use craigsphone instead of Craigster to search the hot classified site.

Most of these applications are “location aware” which means that users can find what they’re looking within their actual geographic location. Some will even map the jobs for you!

A book that challenges our assumptions on how “branding” works. Jonathan Salem Baskin argues that modern consumers “make decisions based on experience so what matters isn’t how creative, cool or memorable the advertising is, but how companies can directly target consumer behavior.”

I’ll be thinking about how Mr. Baskin’s theories apply to what we do in recruitment advertising in the coming weeks.
